Are Electric Wax Warmers Safe? The Complete Guide to Electric Wax Warmer Safety UK

I am often asked, but are Electric Wax Warmers Safe? Here is the truth: electric wax warmers are one of the safest home fragrance options available in the UK. There is no open flame, no smoke, no soot and no fire risk from the warmer itself. A Scentsy electric wax warmer uses a low-wattage bulb or hot plate to melt scented wax at around 56 degrees, well below any combustion temperature.

I’m Alexandra Watson, and together with my husband Scott, I have been an independent Scentsy Consultant since April 2011, when we became the very first Scentsy Consultants in the UK and Europe. We have run Scentsy warmers in our home every day for fifteen years. Here is everything you need to know about using them safely.

This guide focuses on the warmer itself. For questions about the wax, our wax melt safety FAQs cover pets, children and toxicity, and the electric wax warmer FAQs cover bulbs and running costs.

Are Electric Wax Warmers Safe to Leave On?

Yes. Scentsy electric wax warmers are designed for extended use in an occupied home. They use a low-wattage heat source with no open flame. There is no dripping wax, no exposed flame and no burning material. You can leave a Scentsy warmer running throughout the day in a room you are in without any concern.

The standard precaution that applies to any electrical appliance also applies here: switch off when leaving the house for an extended period. This is good practice rather than a safety necessity, as the warmers have no fire risk, but it is sensible housekeeping.

Are Wax Warmers Safe Around Children?

Electric wax warmers are significantly safer around children than burning candles. There is no open flame to reach for or knock over. Most Scentsy full-size warmers have a cool-to-the-touch exterior in areas a child might touch, with the heat contained inside the unit around the bulb and dish area.

The wax dish does get warm during use. It is not hot enough to cause a serious burn in a brief touch, but the top of the warmer where the dish sits should be treated as a warm surface. Keep warmers on a stable, elevated surface out of reach of young children who might grab at them.

Are Wax Warmers Safe Around Pets?

Electric wax warmers are much safer around pets than burning candles. No open flame means no risk of a curious cat or dog setting something alight. The wax itself, if a pet were to access it, is non-toxic in the quantities present in a warmer dish.

The practical concern with pets is the same as with children: keep the warmer on a stable surface where it cannot be knocked over. A full warmer dish of liquid wax tipping onto a surface is a mess rather than a danger, but it is worth avoiding. Plug-in mini wax warmers, which sit directly in a wall socket at height, are an excellent option for pet households because they are completely out of reach.

Are the Fragrance Oils in Wax Melts Safe?

Scentsy fragrance oils are formulated to IFRA (International Fragrance Association) standards. IFRA is the global industry body that sets safety standards for fragrance ingredients used in consumer products. Scentsy fragrance bars are free from phthalates. The fragrance concentration in Scentsy wax is designed to release at the gentle temperatures of an electric warmer, not burn off at high heat.

Some people with fragrance sensitivities or asthma find that any scented product can cause irritation. This applies to all home fragrance products, including air fresheners, scented candles and wax melts. If you have a known sensitivity, start with a lighter fragrance and shorter use periods to assess your reaction.

Electric Wax Warmer Safety Tips

  1. Place the warmer on a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface.
  2. Keep away from curtains, fabrics and anything flammable.
  3. Keep out of reach of young children and pets.
  4. Do not overfill the dish. One to four cubes is the recommended amount.
  5. Always switch off and allow wax to cool before handling the dish or removing wax.
  6. Replace the bulb with the correct wattage only. Scentsy warmers use a 25-watt candelabra bulb. Using a higher-wattage bulb will overheat the wax.
  7. Check the power cord periodically for any damage.

Frequently Asked Questions: Wax Warmer Safety

Can I leave a wax warmer on all night?

Yes. Scentsy electric wax warmers are safe to run overnight in a room you are sleeping in. They use a low-wattage heat source with no open flame. Millions of Scentsy customers run their warmers through the night without incident.

What happens if a wax warmer is left on too long?

Nothing harmful. The warmer continues to operate at its designed temperature. Once the fragrance has fully evaporated from the wax, you will simply no longer smell anything. The wax remains in the dish and can be removed and replaced. There is no safety risk from extended running time.

Are wax warmers a fire hazard?

Electric wax warmers are not a fire hazard when used correctly. They have no open flame and operate at a low temperature. The key safety practices are: keep away from flammable materials, place on a stable surface, and use the correct bulb wattage.

Are wax melts toxic to cats and dogs?

Scentsy wax melts are made from food-grade paraffin and IFRA-compliant fragrance oils. They are not formulated with any ingredients that are specifically toxic to pets. However, some essential oils used in fragrance products can cause irritation in cats in particular. Scentsy fragrance bars use fragrance oils (not pure essential oils) at safe concentrations.

How hot does a Scentsy wax warmer get?

Scentsy electric warmers heat the wax dish to around 56 to 70 degrees depending on the model and ambient temperature. This is warm to the touch but well below cooking or combustion temperatures.
