This is a definitive guide with our Wax Melts FAQs.
Scentsy wax melts are break-apart scented wax melt bars, warmed in an electric warmer rather than burned. This page answers the most common questions about how they work, how to use them and how to get the most from every bar. Frequently Asked Questions
What are wax melts and how do they work?
Wax melts are blocks of scented wax that you break into cubes and warm in an electric wax warmer. The warmer uses a low-watt bulb or heating element to gently melt the wax, releasing fragrance into the room without a flame, smoke, or soot. Scentsy Wax Melts contain 8 break-apart cubes.
How long do wax melts last?
Scentsy states that most bars last between 40 and 100 hours of warming time, depending on the fragrance, room size and temperature. In our 15 years of daily use, Scentsy fragrances sit at the top of that range and often beyond it. We have had Snowberry cubes warming for two full days and still going strong.
How many cubes of a Scentsy Wax Melts bar should I use?
One or two cubes is right for most rooms. Many warmer dishes are stamped with the recommended number of cubes for that model; see our electric wax warmer FAQs for more on choosing the right warmer. Using more cubes makes the scent stronger but uses the bar up faster; it will not make the fragrance last longer overall.
Can you reuse wax melts once the fragrance fades?
No, once the fragrance has faded, the wax has done its job and should be replaced, even though the wax itself does not evaporate or disappear. Pour the spent wax out, wipe the dish clean, and add fresh cubes. The old wax can go straight in the bin.
Do wax melts smell as strong as candles?
Wax melts often produce a stronger, more consistent scent throw than a burning candle because the fragrance is released as the wax gently warms rather than being carried on smoke from a flame. Scentsy Wax Melts are formulated for scent load, so a well-placed warmer can fragrance an entire room.
What temperature do Scentsy wax melts melt at?
Element warmers, sometimes called hot plate warmers, melt wax at around 56°C. Bulb warmers work slightly differently, using the heat of a low-watt light bulb rather than a hot plate, and newer warmer designs can run a little warmer still, but never reach a burning temperature. Either way, the wax stays too cool to scald skin on contact.
Can you mix different wax melt fragrances together?
Yes, mixing Scentsy fragrances is popular and mostly involves trial and error. A good starting point is to pair scents from complementary fragrance families, such as a fruity note with a floral one, or a warm spice with a bakery scent, and adjust the ratio of cubes to taste.
How do you remove wax melt residue from a warmer?
The quickest method is the cotton ball trick. With the wax still melted, switch the warmer off and drop one or two cotton balls into the dish. They soak up the wax in seconds and lift straight out. Alternatively, let the wax set fully, then gently warm the dish for a minute so the disc of wax slides out in one piece.
Can you put wax melts in any warmer, or only Scentsy ones?
Scentsy Wax Melts are formulated specifically for Scentsy Warmers, with a wax blend chosen for its melting point and scent load. We would always recommend using genuine Scentsy Wax Melts in a genuine Scentsy Warmer to get the fragrance experience they are designed for.
Why has my wax melt gone cloudy or changed colour?
This is usually caused by temperature changes rather than anything being wrong with the wax. Extreme heat or cold can cause the fragrance oils to separate from the wax and rise to the surface, giving a cloudy or sweaty appearance. It does not affect how the wax performs once warmed.
How should I store wax melts to keep them fresh?
Store wax melts flat, with the label facing up, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and away from radiators or other heat sources. Avoid storing them in a hot car, as they can soften or melt. Stored this way, bars keep their fragrance for a long time.
