• Smoke and soot. Pets have smaller respiratory systems than humans and are proportionally more sensitive to airborne particles. The soot produced by a burning candle, particularly a poorly made one with a zinc-core wick, deposits particles into the air that pets breathe. Prolonged exposure has been linked to respiratory irritation in cats and dogs.
• Certain essential oils. Pure essential oils can be genuinely toxic to cats, who lack a specific liver enzyme needed to process certain compounds. Tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint, cinnamon, clove and citrus oils are among those flagged as problematic for cats specifically. Dogs are more resilient, but high concentrations of certain oils can cause issues.
