Fragrance Families Explained: How to Choose the Right Wax Melt Scent
Choosing a wax melt fragrance is easier when you understand fragrance families. Rather than smelling dozens of bars one by one, knowing which fragrance family suits you narrows the choice to a manageable shortlist immediately. I’m Alexandra Watson, and together with my husband Scott I have been an independent Scentsy Consultant since April 2011, when we became the very first Scentsy Consultants in the UK and Europe. Scentsy organises its range into seven fragrance families, and understanding what each one means in practice is the fastest route to finding scents you love.
The Seven Scentsy Fragrance Families
1. Fresh
Fresh Scentsy fragrances are clean, airy and bright: laundered cotton, ocean air, rain, cut grass and soft white musk. They evoke cleanliness and open air, from environmental scents like sea breeze through to intimate, skin-like notes such as clean cotton and soft powder. Fresh is the most universally liked fragrance family and the most popular in the UK, which is why it is also the biggest family in the current range. If you want your home to smell clean and welcoming, fresh is where to start, and it is brilliant for bedrooms and bathrooms.
2. Fruity
Fruity Scentsy fragrances lead with bright, juicy fruit notes: tropical fruits, berries, melon, peach and more. They tend to be energetic and uplifting rather than calming, and they work brilliantly in kitchens and bright, sociable spaces. Note that fruity fragrance oils evaporate at lower temperatures, so the cube life is typically shorter than cosy or gourmand fragrances.
3. Citrus
Citrus Scentsy fragrances are the zesty branch of the range: lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit and bergamot. Where fruity scents are sweet and juicy, citrus scents are sharp, sparkling and instantly refreshing, which makes them natural morning and kitchen fragrances. Current examples include Blue Skies and Bergamot, Coco Lime and Sunlit Dock.
4. Floral
Floral Scentsy fragrances are built around flower notes: rose, jasmine, peony, lily, gardenia, violet and more. They range from light and airy single-flower scents to rich, complex bouquets. If you like the smell of a florist or a garden in bloom, you are a floral person. Floral fragrances suit bedrooms, living rooms and any space where you want something feminine and natural.
5. Woods
Woods Scentsy fragrances evoke the natural world through sandalwood, cedar, pine, moss, patchouli, vetiver and musk. They are the most sophisticated and unisex family, deeply loved by those who prefer natural, grounded scents. Woods fragrances work beautifully in studies, living rooms and any space with natural materials, wood and leather.
6. Gourmand
Gourmand Scentsy fragrances are the dessert trolley of the range: vanilla, caramel, baked goods, candy and sweet treats. If you love the smell of a bakery, this is your family. Gourmand scents make a home feel welcoming and indulgent, and they are firm favourites in kitchens and open-plan living spaces. Current examples include Vanilla Bourbon and Gimme Candy.
7. Cosy
Cosy Scentsy fragrances wrap warmth around a room: amber, fireside woods, soft musk and spice notes like cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and ginger. These are the fragrances associated with comfort and luxury, and the natural home of autumn and Christmas scents. Their heavier fragrance oils evaporate more slowly, giving longer cube life and stronger depth in large rooms. Bold spice-forward scents can be a lot in smaller rooms, so start with one cube.

Frequently Asked Questions: Fragrance Families
How many fragrance families does Scentsy have?
Scentsy organises its range into seven fragrance families: Fresh, Fruity, Citrus, Floral, Woods, Gourmand and Cosy. Over 80 fragrances are available across these families at any given time.
Which Scentsy fragrance family lasts longest?
Cosy and Gourmand fragrances last longest because their heavier fragrance oils evaporate more slowly. Fruity, Citrus and light Fresh fragrances have lighter oils that evaporate faster, giving a shorter cube life.
Can I mix fragrances from different families?
Yes, and Scentsy actively encourages this through their Mixology concept. Combining a warm base note bar with a fresh top note bar in the same warmer can create complex, layered fragrances that suit your taste exactly.
