Are you struggling with getting your identity back as a mum? You’re absolutely not alone – it’s something that many of us struggle with, and not enough of us talk about!
One of the things people find hardest is that transition when their children begin nursery or school, and they suddenly find themselves with free time. But because they’ve been constantly putting their family and children first for what seems like forever, they have no idea how to use it, and may lack confidence, or even feel guilty about doing something ‘just for them’.
Here are our top tips for getting your identity back as a mum!
Let go of the guilt
Guilt can keep you immobile. We heap unrealistic expectations upon ourselves, trying to be Superwoman – then experience massive guilt when things don’t go to plan, and blame ourselves for not being good enough. But the thing is, it’s ok for things not to be perfect all the time, and it’s also ok to take time out for yourself.
Constantly striving for the unattainable is so damaging to your state of mind. Often this is due to us wanting to keep up appearances, and seem like we’re on top of everything. But the truth is, hardly anyone is. Don’t believe those posts of ‘perfect’ lives on Social Media. And don’t care about what other people think – your true friends won’t give a hoot if your house is a bit messy or you’re having a bad day and need a shoulder to cry on.
Take Care of Yourself
It’s so important to take some much needed time for yourself, and we often put ourselves last as mums. Taking care of kids 24/7 is exhausting, and can be a black hole for your sense of self identity and worth. If you don’t take the time to reconnect with yourself, it can damage your mood and mental health.
Taking care of yourself can have incredible results on your health, body, self esteem, attitude, and happiness! But don’t let anyone else tell you what you should be doing – you do you.
Maybe you want to exercise, or meditate. Maybe you want to relax in a deep bubble bath. Or maybe you just want to curl up with a cuppa and a great book. Whatever floats your boat, just do it! You’ll cope and take care of everybody and everything much more easily if you’ve got a little self-care in.
Do Something for Your Future
One of the best ways of getting your identity back as a mum is doing something for your future, and looking at continuing your career, or starting a new one!
It’s so easy to learn new skills online, whether you want to go all out and do an academic qualification, or short courses in a subject that interests you.
However, there are plenty of opportunities from working from home, including starting up your own home business. This can help whether you want a full time career or just some part-time work to help put a little bit of savings aside, or save up for those home renovations, or that new car. Maybe you just want a little extra ‘mad money’ for a little monthly shopping trip or night out with the girls.
With Scentsy we built a family company, become debt free, got a house for cash and have savings. Could this help you?
