How to Store Wax Melts: Keep Your Fragrance Bars Fresh for Longer

Learn How to Store Wax Melts so your wax melt bars hold their fragrance for up to 12 months or more. Store them badly, and the fragrance oils evaporate before you even put the wax in the warmer.

I’m Alexandra Watson, and together with my husband Scott, I have been an independent Scentsy Consultant since April 2011, when we became the very first Scentsy Consultants in the UK and Europe. Here are the rules we follow and recommend to every customer to get the best from thier Scentsy wax melts no matter how long they hoard them.

Where Should You Store Wax Melts?

The two things that degrade wax melt fragrance fastest are heat and light. Fragrance oils are volatile compounds that begin to evaporate when exposed to warmth. Direct sunlight accelerates this significantly. The ideal storage location is cool, dry and dark.

  • A drawer or wardrobe. The most practical option for most people. Cool, dark, away from sunlight and away from any heat source.
  • A storage box or tin. Keeps bars together, protects from light and dust, and can be kept anywhere that is not near a radiator or window.
  • A cool room. If you bulk-buy Scentsy fragrance bars during a sale, store them in the coolest room in the house, not the kitchen or bathroom where temperature fluctuates.

What to Avoid When Storing Wax Melts

  • Windowsills. Direct sunlight degrades fragrance oils rapidly. Even in winter, a sunny windowsill will warm wax bars enough to begin losing fragrance.
  • Near radiators or heating vents. Warmth from a radiator even across the room will accelerate fragrance evaporation from stored bars.
  • The kitchen. Temperature fluctuates dramatically in kitchens. Steam from cooking also affects wax quality over time.
  • Airtight plastic bags long-term. Short-term, this is fine, but over months the fragrance oils can interact with some plastics. A drawer or box is better for long-term storage.

How Long Do Wax Melts Last in Storage?

Scentsy fragrance bars stored correctly in a cool, dry, dark location will retain their full fragrance quality for 12 months or more. The wax itself does not expire or go bad. Only the fragrance oils can degrade if exposed to heat and light over time. We have used bars stored for over a year that smelled as strong as the day we bought them.

If you find a stored bar has lost significant fragrance, it has been stored somewhere too warm or too light. The bar will still melt cleanly, and the wax is still fine, but the scent throw will be weaker than a fresh bar.

Can You Store Wax Melts in the Fridge?

Yes. The fridge is an excellent storage environment for wax melts: cool, dark when closed, and stable temperature. The one practical issue is fragrance transfer. Strong wax melt fragrances can subtly scent nearby food items. If you store bars in the fridge, keep them in a sealed container.

Storing Different Fragrances Together

Different fragrance bars stored together in an open container or drawer will cross-scent over time, particularly with stronger fragrance families. To prevent this, keep bars in their original packaging or in a sealed bag or tin, especially if storing very different scent families like heavy spice bars next to light fresh or floral bars.

They can if stored badly. Heat and direct sunlight are the main causes of fragrance loss in stored wax bars. In a cool, dry, dark location, fragrance quality is well preserved.
